What username do I log into webmail with?
In order to log into webmail you must use your full e-mail address
as the username. Entering only your username will not work.
Is the webmail on a secure page?
Yes, the webmail is secure with 128 bit encryption so your
password and mail cannot be seen by others.
How do I get my mail at home with an e-mail client such as Outlook, Evolution, Eudora, Thunderbird, etc?
The standard way to get your mail from home is to create an account in your
client using the POP3 protocol. To do this you will need to add your account with the
following settings:
Username: user@domain.com (the same as your webmail login)
POP3 server: mail.bigfiber.net
In order to prevent spam from being sent through our mail servers we do not provide outgoing mail service.
Your Internet Service Provider will provide you with a server address that you can use to send mail
using your domain hosted with us. Within your e-mail client setup you would configure the following setup:
SMTP server: ISP's SMTP server (examples: smtp.telus.net, shawmail.cg.shawcable.net)
Can I use POP3S (secure POP/SSL)?
Yes you can. The settings will be the same as above only you will enable the option for secure POP3S in your client.
Can I use IMAP or IMAPS?
You you can. The settings will be the same as with POP3 only you will select IMAP or IMAPS
in your e-mail client. You will still use the address mail.bigfiber.net as your receiving server address.
I lost my password! How do I get it back?
If you are the admin of the account with us then please contact our support team for help.
If you are not the admin of the account, please contact the person who is to have them set a new
password for you.
Is there virus protection?
Yes there is. Every mail is scanned for virus attachments or dangerous malformed mail headers.
Any such mail is automatically deleted and you will not receive it.
Is there spam protection?"
Yes there is. Every mail is scanned and rated for its
potential to be spam. Each mail is then tagged with a special mail
header showing its spam rating. You can see this rating by selecting an
e-mail in your e-mail client, and viewing the full headers of the message.
Most clients will allow you to right click the message to see this information.
A message that was scanned and determined to have a low likelyhood of being spam
would have a heading that looked similar to this:
X-Spam-Status: No, hits=2.2 required=6.0
Here you can see that the threshold is 6.0 while the message only scored 2.2 points
so it is not likely to be spam.
A mail that was found to have a very high likelyhood of being spam would
be tagged like so:
X-Spam-Status: Yes, hits=12.2 required=6.0
Using this information you can create a rule in your e-mail client to deal with spam
messages. You could have them automatically moved to a special spam folder for you to
check quickly before deleting, or even delete them automatically. Most popular e-mail
clients such as Outlook, Evolution, Eudora, and Thunderbird have this capabality built
in. One such client that is know to lack this capability however is Outlook Express. If
you use Outlook Express we recommend you try Thunderbird because it is highly evolved
and free of charge.
I am the admin for a domain. How do I add users?
All administrative functions are performed through webmail. Once you have logged into
your webmail account, select Options from the top menu. There you will see a selection labeled
Administrative Interface. Inside the administrative interface you will be able to manage the users
for your domain.
How can I read my mail from within SSH?
There are many ways to do this. While these methods might require a little more
learning before you'll be proficient with them it can be very convenient to check your mail this way.
The most common way is to use the command line mail client called mutt. To use mutt you would type
"mutt -f imaps://mail.bigfiber.net", press o to accept the certificate, and then enter your e-mail
address to login. Another way to check your mail would be to use a text based web browser such as
links to visit https://mail.bigfiber.net.
Who do I contact if I still have problems?
If you are not the admin of the domain, please contact your
domain admin first for help.
If you are the admin of the domain please e-mail
support@bigfiber.net
